Description

Travel through downtown Haugesund, admiring its architectural gems and discovering the history of the self-proclaimed Homeland of the Viking Kings. Haugesund is inseparably linked to the sea and owes its prosperity to the rich herring fisheries that thrived in the 19th century. As you meander the beautiful quayside, the guide will elaborate on this watershed time period and point out landmarks along the way. You will also stroll the main shopping street, pedestrian-only Haraldsgata, where you will find everything from exquisite jewelry to designer fashions. Visiting the neo-classical, pink-hued town hall is also noteworthy, as it was once voted Norway’s most beautiful such building. Although the Vikings are long gone, their influence is still ever-present. The world’s largest replica Viking longboat, the Dragon Harald Fairhair, was built here in 2012 and it sailed across the Atlantic Ocean a few years later. That success lent further credence to the Norse colonization of North America in the 10th century.
