Cartagena Fortress and Old City Shore Excursion in Cartagena, Colombia
Commencing with a drive to the San Felipe Fortress, the largest Spanish fort in the New World, you’ll be welcomed with a guided tour of this unforgettable 17th century grand structure. Featuring seven miles of walls surrounding the city, with fortifications on every point and narrows to defend against military attacks, it’s no wonder it took 208 years to reach completion.
Onward to the Old City, where you’ll stroll approximately five blocks through the city's Colonial area overlooking the gorgeous ocean. Along the way, we’ll take you to the Saint Peter Claver Church and Cloister, built in homage to the protector of slaves. You’ll also glimpse upon the remains of Saint Peter Claver, which are encased upon the High Altar.
Next, you’ll stop briefly under the breathtaking, huge trees in the cloister's courtyard to see where the saint baptized tens of thousands of black slaves.
Continuing with a visit to the Inquisition Plaza, the main square of the city, you’ll gaze from one side to another capturing both the historical cathedral and wondrous Inquisition Palace. The day concludes with a chance to indulge at the Pierino Gallo Plaza, where you’ll find Cartagena's finest emeralds, jewelry, coffee, handcrafts and leather goods.
