Description

Gain an appreciation for Skiathos’ religious history by visiting a seaside church and a 19th-century monastery complex on this illuminating tour. You’ll stop briefly at the tiny whitewashed Church of Agios Taxiarchis, a quintessentially Greek sanctuary that overlooks a long, sun-kissed beach. Rising above a forested mountainside, you’ll find the imposing Evangelistria Monastery, once a shelter for freedom fighters and refugees from the Greek Revolution that has also served as a political prison and as a producer of olive oil. Discover that the iconic Greek flag, which sports a white cross on a blue background, was designed, woven, blessed and raised here for the very first time. On your guided tour, notice the monastery’s striking gray shale-sheathed dome, and appreciate the authentic period furnishings in many of the rooms and chapels. In a small ecclesiastical museum, view exhibits of vestments, rare 17th-century manuscripts, Byzantine icons and silver crosses. You’ll learn that the monks have revived the vineyard for the production of Alypiakos wine, which is available in the gift shop as a perfect memento of this intriguing monastery.
