Description

Explore modern attractions in Jakarta that highlight recent history and contemporary life in the capital of Indonesia. As an example of the city’s diversity and religious tolerance, you will see the Roman Catholic Jakarta Cathedral standing right next to the Isitqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. You will also drive past the Presidential Palace, which now houses an esteemed art collection, and the National Monument, an obelisk crowned with a golden flame that commemorates Indonesia’s independence from the Netherlands in 1945. You will gain an even deeper appreciation for the country at the National Museum of Indonesia, which is affectionately called the Elephant Building because a bronze elephant statue dominates the front of it. Inside, you will browse an array of prehistoric and contemporary artifacts such as textiles, sculptures, household items and ceramics.
