Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Thailand

Bangkok is the capital and largest city in Thailand. It began as a small trading center on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River serving the Ayutthaya Kingdom, the precursor of modern Thailand which existed from 1350 to 1767. The city has vastly modernized and undergone numerous changes, including the introduction of transportation and utility infrastructure in the reigns of King Mongkut and King Chulalongkorn, and quickly developed into the economic centre of Thailand.

Cruises That Visit This Port:

Grand Palace & the Emerald Buddha
Tour Code: LCH-5381
Duration: 5 hours

Extreme Walking or Long Tours

Explore Bangkok's exotic sites and marketplaces during this memorable visit to the Grand Palace, and the city's main shopping area.

Depart the pier for the drive to the Grand Palace, which showcases the most beautiful example of an ancient Siamese Court. Different palaces were built and named for different occasions; the Funeral Palace, Reception Palace, Throne Hall, Coronation Hall and Temple of the Emerald Buddha, perhaps the most breathtaking of them all. The Buddha is made of translucent green jasper, and the king changes its vestments three times a year during a solemn ceremony.

Following your visit to the Grand Palace, a visit will be made to the main shopping area. Here, Bangkok's prized Thai silk and precious gems may be purchased before re-boarding your coach for the return drive to the hotel.

Please note: This tour will depart from the pier, and conclude at the Shangri-LA Hotel. Your arrival at the hotel may precede the official 3 p.m. check-in time, though bags may be checked with the bell captain. In addition, there will be a hospitality desk at the hotel to provide independent sightseeing options and information on dining venues. Please note that, out of respect for local customs, a strict dress code applies for this tour. Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and full-length pants are required. Video and still cameras may be used on the grounds, but no photography is permitted inside the building. Shoes must be removed before entering the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
