Stockholm, Sweden

The largest city in Sweden and all of Scandinavia, Stockholm is actually built on 14 small islands and is part of 24,000 islands dotting the bays and channels surrounding the archipelago. With broad streets, parks and well-planned housing, modern Stockholm is architecturally one of the finest cities in the world. Built on numerous peninsulas and islands, with large bodies of water contributing to a feeling of openness, lead Stockholm to be called “Venice of the North.”

Extreme Walking or Long Tours

A short drive takes you to Fjällgatan for a splendid panoramic view of Stockholm and the surrounding islands. It's a great starting point to gain a perspective for what lies ahead. After descending, you will drive through Gamla Stan, Stockholm's medieval Old Town, and past the Royal Palace, the massive 608-room residence of Sweden's king and queen. Continuing along the waterfront, down the Strandvägen, a stately street lined with foreign embassies and the beautiful Royal Dramatic Theater, you will come upon the island of Djurgården. Here, in the Vasa Musuem, you will see the namesake Vasa, a 17th-century warship that is the world's oldest complete ship. Ironically, in 1628 it sank to the bottom of the harbor on its maiden voyage, where it remained until being salvaged 333 years later. Other highlights on this driving tour are the fashionable neighborhood of Östermalm , the Royal Opera House and the Swedish Parliament Building at the entrance to the Old Town.
