Cabo San Lucas, Mexico-port

Twenty years ago Cabo San Lucas, at the southernmost tip of Baja, was little more than a fishing village occasionally visited by itinerant Californian surfers and sport fishermen with the means to sail in or fly down. In recent years, however, it has rapidly become the focal point of Los Cabos, the catch-all term for the beaches and resorts ringing the toe of the peninsula. Condos have sprung up, palms transplanted, water piped in and everything is kept pristine.

4x4 Mini Jeep Safari

Most Active or Strenuous

Duration: 3 1/2 hours

Tour Code: CSL-017

Drive along the canyon trails and through the open expanses of the nearby desert in a 4x4 mini Jeep, taking in the extraordinary interior and coastal vistas.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely drive through the countryside to a spectacular seaside ranch. Soon after arriving and receiving a safety briefing, you will hop into a 4x4 mini Jeep, a two-person vehicle made specifically for this sort of rugged terrain, and zip off into the hills.

Over the next two hours or so, you will travel in a guided caravan and explore the hauntingly beautiful Baja desert, a rocky land of mesquite trees, shrubby pines and endemic Cardon cacti. Slow-growing and long-lived, these waxy cacti often reach soaring heights up to 70 feet over centuries of growth.

The scenery will alter dramatically with the altitude. In the higher elevations, you may see deer, rabbits and even big-horned sheep in the distance. Along the coast, there are more spiny-tailed iguanas, swallows and several species of sea birds. Pelicans are particularly prevalent. In the winter months, you might also catch sight of a pod of migrating whales that started their journey 6,000 miles away in the cold waters of the Bering Sea.

Stops will be made along the way, allowing you to take in the panoramas and snap photos of the most inspirational spots. Depending on the route, you might also see a traditional mud house designed with thick walls for natural cooling. Afterwards, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes minimal walking, mainly at the guests’ discretion during the stops. The ride can be bumpy and dusty as the vehicle will travel over dirt, sand and gravel roads and dependent upon the route, dry river beds. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests, guests with mobility concerns, heart or respiratory conditions, neck or back injuries, or pregnant women. Participants should be in good physical condition. Long pants, short-sleeved shirt; light jacket or windbreaker; sun cap; sunglasses; and sunscreen are recommended. Flat, closed-toe shoes are mandatory. The minimum age to participate is 12 years and maximum allowable weight is 250 lbs. Guests wishing to drive must be at least 21 years of age and present a valid driver’s license. The mini jeeps will have an automatic transmission.
