Banana Plantation & City Sights

Moderate Activity/Walking

Duration: 4 1/2 hours

Tour Code: CIA-001

Puerto Chiapas is widely recognized as a major producer of coffee and bananas. This pleasant half day tour gives you an intriguing introduction to the region's thriving banana industry as well as the city of Tapachula.

Traveling by coach from the pier, you'll enjoy a scenic drive to one of the local banana plantations where you will have a chance to observe the process where the workers cut, select and package only the best bananas that have been cultivated in the Soconusco area. After viewing how the bananas are harvested, you'll be invited to sample some of the fruit while you relax and take in the beauty of this natural setting and breathe the fresh tropical air.

Following your visit, you'll travel to Tapachula, a culturally diverse city that rests at the foot of the Chiapas Highlands and serves as the commercial center for this agricultural region of Mexico. Highlights seen in the city are the Colonial-styled Saint Augustine Church, the Soconusco Archaeological Museum (optional, entrance fee is not included) and the government building with its beautiful stained-glass windows. There will be free time provided to stroll the streets and shop for leather goods and ceramics made by local artisans, or to simply sit and unwind at Miguel Hidalgo Central Park, listening to the sounds of a local band as they play marimba music for your enjoyment. When your time in Tapachula comes to a close, you'll re-join your coach and drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1.5 hours of walking plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. The sites visited are not wheelchair accessible and therefore, it is not considered suitable for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Comfortable clothing, a hat, sunglasses and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
