Ports and Excursions of South America

Valparaíso, Chile-port

Valparaíso is the principal port and second largest city of Chile. The city is situated on the shores of a sweeping bay and on a crescent of hills behind. Seen from the ocean, it presents a majestic panorama; a great circle of hills is backed by the snow-capped peaks of the distant Cordillera. Due to Valparaiso’s convenient location along the shipping routes circling Cape Horn, the port experienced a tremendous boost when the ports and the Americas were opened to world trade.

Chile's picturesque natural beauty and stunning architecture are yours to discover during this full-day tour of Santiago, and a panoramic drive through Viña del Mar.

Depart the pier for the 2-hour drive from Valparaíso to Santiago. En route, you will cross the central valley and coastal range. Upon arrival in Santiago, you will take an orientation tour of the city. Along the way, you will see historic and modern sites that include the Presidential Palace, La Moneda, Club Hipico, O'Higgins Park, Plaza de Armas, and the Cathedral.

Next, you will continue through the city's newer residential areas, then visit one of the lookouts located half way up San Cristobal Hill for breathtaking views and photo opportunities over Santiago.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you will journey back to the coast for a tour of Viña del Mar, a lovely and fashionable resort city. Here, you will see the resort's famous landmark, the floral clock, along with Cerro Castillo. Perched atop a steep bluff, Cerro Castillo serves as the summer palace of the Presidents of the Republic.

Following your tour, you will depart for the 2-hour return drive to the pier.

Please note: The drive from the pier to Santiago is approximately 2 hours in each direction, depending on traffic and road conditions. This tour is mostly panoramic in nature with limited optional walking at any stops made. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
