Ancient Oracle Centers in Lima
Duration: 3 3/4 hours
Tour Code: LIM-005
Explore the origins of Lima's historic past during a journey to a pair of ancient oracle centers discovered within two modern districts.
Depart the pier for the drive to the Pucllana Historical Park, where you will have an opportunity to explore the remains of Huaca Pucllana, an ancient civilization that existed between the 5th and 8th centuries B.C. Upon arrival, you will be met by an archaeologist, who will take you for a guided tour of the archaeological site, and share interesting facts and information about life in ancient times along the way. Your first stop is the pre-Incan pyramid of adobe bricks, one of Peru's most important administrative and ceremonial centers for Chancay, Chillón, Rimac, and Lurín Valley settlers between 200 AD and 700 AD. This site is also thought to be the residence of high priests, and there is evidence of religious ceremonies, rites and sacrifices in honor of their deities. Periodically, musical events and shows are held at the pyramid. At the park's onsite museum, you can view centuries-old artifacts unearthed during the excavations. The museum also features areas of research, conservation and restoration, as well as cultural promotion.
Next, you will continue on to Huaca Huallamarca, an oracle center that functioned for 1,200 years prior to the Spanish conquest. This imposing monument has remained impervious to the ravages of time and modern civilization, and stands surrounded by an asphalt jungle. Its two-story construction is made of adobe, with a steep ramp leading to the upper level. Archaeological excavations here have unearthed mummies, on display with ancient objects inside the park's onsite museum. Following your visit, you will rejoin your coach for the return drive to the pier and ship.
