Massive, riverside Turku Castle is by far the most imposing sight on the agenda, a stronghold that has survived sieges, fires, incendiary bombing and years of abandonment. Today, it stands completely renovated – a fascinating museum filled with hundreds of artifacts, a church once used as the Great Hall, a priceless porcelain collection and murals depicting watershed historic events. Long ago, the castle’s aristocratic residents did their hunting among the dense oaks of Ruissalo island – another scenic stop on this multifaceted tour. Wander here independently and discover charming old villas, beautiful beaches, botanical gardens and more. Meanwhile, seaside Naantali and its Old Town make the ideal choice for an enlightening walking tour – followed by some free time to explore further on your own.
