Ports and Excursions of Northern Europe

Portree, United Kingdom-port

Portree, the largest town on the renowned Isle of Skye in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, has a picture-perfect harbor, fringed by cliffs, with a pier designed by noted Scottish civil engineer and architect Thomas Telford. In-town attractions include the Áros Centre, celebrating the island’s Gaelic heritage; and MacNab’s Inn, the last meeting place of Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746. The town is also an excellent starting point for day trips around the beautiful island; the most popular being drives to the north country to see such sites as the Old Man of Storr and the small crafting town of Staffin and to the western side of the island to Medieval Dunvegan Castle with its lovely surrounding woodlands, sea lochs, rivers and gardens.

Duration: 3 1/2 hours

Tour Code: IOS-002

Take a step back into Medieval times during this visit to Scotland's extraordinary Dunvegan Castle.

Depart the charming Port of Portree for the drive west across the lovely Isle of Skye to Dunvegan Castle, seat of the Clan MacLeod chiefs since the 13th century. Dunvegan Castle is one of the greatest and most renowned among the Hebridean strongholds, and the only one to have been continuously owned and occupied by the same family for 8 centuries.

During your tour of Dunvegan Castle, an assortment of priceless heirlooms will be displayed, including some that descended in the hands of the Chiefs of MacLeod since Medieval times. You'll see such treasures as the Dunvegan Cup, mysterious Fairy Flag and Rory Mor's Horn, and explore the lovely gardens that surround the waterfall known as Rorie Mor's Cascade.

You'll enjoy Scotland's scenic landscapes, including the famous Cuillin Mountains, on the return drive to Portree and your ship.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of walking and there are stairs to negotiate at the Castle. The tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing, umbrellas and flat comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
