Explore a treasure trove of archaeological wonders during this guided tour of Cornwall, ancient land of the Celts.
Depart the pier via coach for a guided tour through the mysterious and mythical windswept landscapes of the Cornwall region. Accompanied by your expert guide, you'll see standing stones and ancient earthworks dating back before Merlin and Camelot, and rivaling those of the Orkneys. Visit Chysauster, a fascinating and picturesque late-Iron Age village that was believed to have been occupied in the years leading up to, and during, the Roman occupation. Many of Chysauster's nine large oval houses remain very well preserved. You'll be able to see clearly how the buildings were laid out and interpret them with your guide. In addition to learning the importance of the central flat stone socket hole, terraced gardens and other similarities found in villages today, you'll discover how this site fits into the larger Cornish context of its archaeological heritage.
Next, you'll continue through the Cornish countryside to Lanyon Quoit. Believed to be the burial chamber of a long mound, Lanyon Quoit is unusual in many ways and thought to have been more of a mausoleum or cenotaph than a grave. Recent theories suggest that these megalithic monuments were never completely covered by mounds; their granite capstone and front portal stones were purposely left uncovered to form a dramatic background to the ceremonies performed there.
Following your archaeological adventure, you'll return to your ship in Falmouth.
Please note: This tour includes a moderate amount of walking over some uneven surfaces and there are steps to climb. The walk up to the Castle is on a gradual slope. The tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and not recommended for those guests with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain.
