Athens (Piraeus), Greece-port

Piraeus is the gateway to the ancient city of Athens, known as the “Cradle of Western Civilization” because of its immense impact on cultural and political achievements throughout the world. Due mainly to tourism and the 2004 Olympics, Greece has redeveloped many sites in Athens. A historian’s delight, Athens is home to such magnificent wonders as: the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the atmospheric winding streets of the Plaka, Temple of Olympian Zeus and Temple of Athena Nike, and the Archaeological Museum with the world’s finest collection of ancient artifacts.

Acropolis & Plaka Stroll

Moderate Activity/Walking

Duration: 6 3/4 hours

Tour Code: PIR-006

Traveling by coach from the pier, this tour will provide you with an excellent introduction to one of the great cities of the ancient world. Some of the sites you will see along your tour route will be the Olympic Stadium where the Olympic Games were revived in 1896 and again returned in 2004, the former Royal Palace, which is now the Parliament Building, Constitution Square and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.

Your first stop will be a visit to the Acropolis, a symbol of the glory of ancient Greece. Experience the same awe climbing the smooth marble steps as visitors have for centuries. History will literally open before you as you reach the Propylaea, one of the masterpieces of classical architecture which serves as the entrance to the complex of buildings. During your visit you will see the Temple of Athena Nike (Wingless Victory), and the Erectheum, with its classical Porch of Maidens, the Caryatids. Stand in amazement of what is considered by many to be the most perfect example of classical architecture in the world - the Parthenon, designed as a shrine to Athena and at one time housing a massive gold and ivory statue of the warrior goddess.

Gazing down from the Acropolis, you can view the two ancient theaters that rest in its shadow, the Greek theater of Dionyssos where the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were first presented to delighted audiences, and the theater of Herod Atticus, a grand Roman theater restored and still used today for concerts and classical plays during the summer Athens Festival.

Following your visit of the Acropolis, you will re-board your coach and proceed to the Historical Center of Athens for a guided walking tour and free time for lunch and shopping in Plaka. At the conclusion of your tour, your coach will return you to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of walking and/or standing, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time and there is a considerable amount of steps to negotiate at the Acropolis (approximately 80); therefore, this tour is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Order of sights visited may vary. The actual tour duration may vary due to traffic conditions.
