During a brief stop here, you'll be able to take in the sights in this remarkably scenic coastal area, which Greece has proclaimed as a Wetland of International Importance. The diversity of flora and fauna is considerable, especially the species of birds, which number more than 250. You'll want to be sure to capture some photos here before re-boarding your coach and continuing on to Xanthi, another area rich in wildlife.
Known as the "City of a Thousand Colors" because of the influence of numerous conquerors, Xanthi boasts a wonderfully preserved Old Town, which you will explore during your guided walking tour. Perhaps the town's most distinguishing characteristic is its wonderful architecture as evidenced best in expansive Metropolis Square. Here, in the center of town, you will be surrounded by numerous historic buildings made of stone and wood. The Timios Prodromos church is of particular note. Xanthi is also well known for its sweets and pastries, which you will find in abundance in the Old Town.
Following your guided walking tour, you will have some free time to further explore on your own before rejoining your group and traveling to a nearby taverna, where you will be treated to a sampling of traditional mezedes (Greek appetizers) accompanied with a glass of local wine. Afterwards, you will re-board your coach and transfer back to the pier in Kavala where your tour concludes.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of walking in Xanthi, plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. There are some uneven surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability.
