Ports and Excursions of Mediterranean

Santorini, Greece-port

With dramatic views of classic whitewashed houses clinging perilously to the side of the caldera and stunning beaches of white and red sand or black pebbles, it’s no wonder this may be the most photographed scenery in the world. Visit Ancient Akrotiri, the archeological site of a town frozen in time by ash from an eruption 3,600 years ago. Also worth a day trip is the Volcano of Santorini Palea (old) Kameni and Nea (new) Kameni , two small islands of black lava positioned in the centre of the basin of Santorini.

Tour Code: JTR-004

You will depart the ship and board tender boats for your transfer to the port of Athinios. Upon arrival at the port you will board the buses and proceed to the village of Oia, located on the northern end of Santorini. On the way you can see different layers of lava the volcano produced in every phase of its activity. Oia offers magnificent views of the caldera and the rest of the smaller islands. With its cobblestone streets, beautiful old mansions and houses perched on the cliffside, you can admire the traditional Cycladic architecture for which Santorini is so well known.

After spending some free time in Oia and enjoying the many photo opportunities, ascend the colorful rocky sides of the caldera wall while enjoying panoramic views of Santorini and the caldera. Once the top is reached, you will drive through the village of Pyrgos and make your way up to the highest peak of Santorini (883 feet) to Mt. Profitis Ilias where the monastery of the same name was built in 1712. From this point you can enjoy the magnificent view of the entire island from the south end of Perissa Beach to the north part of the island were the village of Oia is situated. Then, proceed to the village of Pyrgos which is a traditional village with fine old houses and the remains of a Venetian castle sitting on the hilltop.

Next, join your guide on a walking tour through the narrow ascending streets that encircle the village. Your walking tour will conclude at the unique circle-shaped tavern where you will enjoy local specialties and the magnificent panoramic views of the volcanic island, the caldera and the sea. Upon arrival at the town of Thira and near the Metropolis church, you will have time for independent sightseeing, shopping or browsing. At your leisure, descend down to the Port of Thira by cable car or donkey. A local tender will then ferry you back to the ship.
