Corsican Wine Discovery
Duration: 1 3/4 hours
Tour Code: AJA-009
Savor several of Corsica’s most traditional and iconic wines at a tasting, while listening to an expert explain the characteristics of the locally grown wines.
After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at one of the most celebrated wine shops on the island. The store carries hundreds of bottles of wine, many of them the finest, most distinctive Corsican wines.
During the tasting that follows, you will learn about the growing conditions that affect Corsican wine. In particular, the weather is Mediterranean, and there are more days of sunshine and less rain than on mainland France. Many of the key wine districts are on the island’s west side so, chances are, the wines you sample will have been produced locally.
Winemaking has flourished on Corsica for nearly 2,500 years. The red wines are principally made with sciaccarellu and niellucciu grapes. The vermentinu grape is used in most whites, and muscat grapes grown farther north are traditionally used for sweeter wines.
You will have the opportunity to taste three different Corsican wines, each with its own characteristics. All the while, the wine expert will extoll the virtues of the different vintages and answer questions you may have about the history of Corsican wine and how it compares to other French wines.
Following your tasting session, you will have time to shop for a favorite vintage before returning to the pier.
