Port Elizabeth, South Africa-port

Located at the endpoint of South Africa’s picturesque Garden Route, Port Elizabeth is nicknamed “The Friendly City.” While regarded as one of the country’s most important seaports, Port Elizabeth is also considered the water sports capital of South Africa. Code: PTEL01

Behold some of South Africa’s most majestic animals on four game drives in the malaria-free Pumba Private Game Reserve, a wonderland of more than 16,000 acres of privately owned bush.

Day 1

After disembarking the ship in Port Elizabeth, you will be met by a local English-speaking tour guide, who will accompany you on the coach transfer to Pumba Private Game Reserve. The traveling time to this part of Eastern Cape South Africa, which is malaria-free, is approximately 1.5 hours.

Upon arriving at the Pumba Water Lodge, you will be greeted with a welcome drink. Lunch follows check-in. In the afternoon, you will embark on your first game drive.

Late afternoon is one of the prime times to view wildlife, as it’s cooler and the animals are more active. While there is no telling what you will observe, the reserve is home to countless animals, including the Big Five: elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo. Endangered white lions also live in Pumba, and seeing one stalking prey or lazing in its natural habitat is a rare, unforgettable experience.

Following the game drive you will return to the lodge for dinner and to spend the evening.

Day 2

Following an early morning wake-up call you will embark on another game drive followed by breakfast and then your four hour transfer back to the ship. For comfort, it’s always advisable to bring warm clothing for the morning game drive.

As before, you will head into the bush in an open-sided 4x4 vehicle, accompanied by knowledgeable rangers and trackers who are skilled at pointing out the various animals.

The reserve sprawls over five biomes of diverse vegetation that support a huge variety of wildlife. You may catch sight of zebras grazing in the grassland, massive hippos wallowing in the mud flats, or herds of antelopes gracefully bounding across the fields. Giraffes often come right up to the vehicles out of curiosity. If you are a bird-lover, you will delight in the more than 300 species that live in the area. Of course, the Big Five always command attention and they are abundant.

Afterwards, you will return to the lodge for a sumptuous breakfast, before checking out and transferring by coach to East London to rejoin the ship.
