Durban, South Africa-port

A bustling, subtropical city and Africa’s busiest port, Vasco da Gama is said to have sighted Durban Bay on Christmas Day, 1497, naming the land Natal as a mark of respect for the Nativity. The name Durban was acquired in 1843 when Port Natal was renamed for Sir Benjamin D'Urban. Today , Durban delights the traveler with its colorful mosaic of ethnic neighborhoods and memorable excursions to game reserves and the traditional lifestyle of the Zulu people. Explore Old Market Square, the Golden Mile beachfront and the scented Botanic Gardens and Gray Street Mosque, the largest in the southern hemisphere.

Thanda Game Reserve - 2 Nights

Code: DURL01

Enjoy a beautiful scenic drive from the Durban harbor to Thanda Private Game Reserve. The integration of South Africa's best climate and rich bush land has made Thanda Private Game Reserve the top award-winning safari destination in South Africa. Thanda, meaning "love" in Zulu, expresses the power of the union between Zulu culture, wildlife, romance and exclusivity. Here you will find that unique and sought-after balance between energizing activity and exquisite relaxation. Ignite your imagination and discover an extraordinary experience for the mind, body, and soul.

DAY 1 – Thursday, December 18, 2014

Depart Durban harbour and travel approximately 3.5 hours to Thanda Private Game Reserve. A boxed lunch will be served en route.

Late afternoon is one of the prime times to view wildlife, as it’s cooler and the animals are more active. While there is no telling what you will observe, the reserve is home to countless animals, including the Big Five: elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo.

You will travel in an open-topped 4x4 Land Rover, the ideal vehicle for unobstructed viewing. Accompanied by experienced rangers and trackers familiar with the animals’ habits, you will drive into the bush. As the animals are used to seeing people and don’t feel threatened, they tend to behave naturally. The experience is sure to be absolutely remarkable.

Following the game drive, sundowners and light snacks will be served at a clearing in the bush, where you might see nocturnal wildlife such as hyenas. In time, you will return to the lodge to complete your check-in and to get ready for dinner at the Lodge.

Overnight at the Thanda Private Game Reserve

DAY 2 – Friday, December 19th, 2014

Spend a glorious day at Thanda enjoying morning and afternoon game drives, thee leisurely meals as well as optional activities hosted by the lodge (additional fees may apply and are payable directly at the lodge). These include bird watching, walking trails, diving, deep sea fishing, cultural village visits, crocodile feeding and more. You will receive a schedule of activities and their costs when you arrive.

DAY 3 - Saturday, December 20th, 2014

The day begins with an early-morning wakeup call, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits in the lounge. As before, you will head into the bush in an open-topped 4x4 Land Rover.

While the Big Five may be wandering about the sprawling 35,000-acre reserve, your guides may point out other commonly seen animals such as endangered black rhinoceroses, cheetahs and warthogs. More than 400 species of birds also live within the reserve, and you can expect to see many of them flitting about and perched in the shrubbery.

Following your return to the lodge for breakfast, you will transfer to the King Shaka International Airport for your flight to Cape Town where upon arrival you are met and transferred to the ship. A boxed lunch prepared by the lodge will be enjoyed en route.
