Gold Ecological Park
Duration: 4 hours
Tour Code: KEE-005
In the late 1800s, this area of Taiwan became a center for gold-mining and this tour takes you to Taiwan's first ecological museum. An hour's drive from Keelung is where you'll find Jinguashi, once a booming mining town that produced both gold and copper. The Ching Dynasty government established a mining bureau from 1892-1893; however, this was taken over by the Japanese in 1895 when Taiwan was ceded to Japan. The days of prosperity faded with time, but today, the Taiwanese government in harmony with the local communities, has undertaken to preserve this wonderful piece of mining history, transforming it into a truly unique ecological and cultural attraction.
Some of the things you can experience here are touching a nearly 500-pound gold brick or trying your hand at panning for gold. Along with its rich gold heritage, Jinguashi also had a darker side, serving as a POW camp during World War II. Allied POWs were brought here from around Southeast Asia and forced into hard labor, working in the copper mine at depths so low the temperature would reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Next to the museum where the mine's history is chronicled in a series of displays and exhibits, are the actual mining tunnels where tours are conducted that demonstrate how the miners extracted the gold and the adverse working conditions.
Following your enjoyable and interesting visit, you'll re-join your coach and travel to Bisha Fishing Port for a brief stop. This popular tourist spot offers up fabulous views of the natural coastline, including the jagged rocks at Hoping Island Park. It is also home to a wealth of eateries that serve up fresh gourmet seafood that comes from the adjacent seafood market.
Your tour concludes with a leisurely drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate walking/standing and is available to wheelchair guests who are able to both make their way on and off the coach and sit in a coach seat. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Casual clothes and comfortable, flat walking shoes are recommended.
