Lautoka, Fiji-port

The Fiji archipelago consists of tiny coral atolls and mountainous forest-clad islands of volcanic origin, and is famed for its aquamarine waters and white sand beaches. Lautoka, meaning “spear-hit” or “hit to win,” was named that as a result of an argument between two chiefs. It is sited in the western side of the largest island in Fiji. The city is surrounded with the blue Pacific Ocean on the western side and green gold sugar cane and pine trees on the other sides.

Fijian Natural Thermal Mud Bath

Light Activity /Walking

Duration: 3 1/2 hours

Tour Code: LAT-008

Indulge in a therapeutic mud bath at an open-air pond in the countryside, followed by a traditional Fijian massage and a shopping opportunity back in Lautoka.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque drive south into the lush Sabeto River Valley. The Sleeping Giant Mountains flank the valley and present a dramatic backdrop for your journey to the Sabeto Mud Pool, an open-air geothermal bath.

Upon arriving, you will be treated to a traditional Fijian welcome ceremony and then prepare for your immersion into the mud pond. The best way get the full benefits of this natural spa is to slather the mineral-rich mud all over your body, wait for it to dry, and then wash it off in the warm water of a nearby pool. As it’s removed, the mud gently exfoliates your skin, leaving it silky smooth and glowing.

Afterwards, you can delve even deeper into the spa’s therapeutic benefits by indulging in a deep-tissue Fijian massage. Traditionally, only the feet are used to massage the body, and it’s a wonderful way to release tension and increase circulation and flexibility.

Following the massage, you will return to Lautoka to browse the stores in the heart of the shopping district. You are sure to find colorful saris, locally made woven goods, handicrafts and jewelry, much of it made with black pearls. After shopping, you will return to the pier.

Please note: Walking on this tour is minimal and mainly at the guests’ discretion during free time in Lautoka. There will be some steps and natural surfaces to negotiate. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty (the sulfur content of the baths may fade the color on some types of cloth); a change of clothes; sunglasses; a towel from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. No hats are to be worn in the village. This is an eco-tourism tour that helps fund village projects. Guests are kindly requested to have minimal conversation and speak quietly at the Sabeto Mud Pool as well as observe and be respectful of the area’s customs and protocol.
