Ride into the bush in expansive Kruger National Park on several game drives to observe Africa’s most iconic wildlife and later enjoy the exquisite comforts of luxurious Lukimbi Safari Lodge.

    Day 1 – Wednesday, December 16th, 2015

Upon disembarkation in Maputo, a local English-speaking tour guide will accompany you on the 2.5-hour transfer in a luxury coach to the southern section of the Kruger National Park. At the Mozambique / South Africa border post, you will disembark and proceed to immigration for customs control.

Once the formalities are completed, you will continue your journey to the Kruger National Park, one of the largest game reserves in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African lowveld, this wildlife sanctuary is like no other and offers the ultimate safari experience.

This is a land of unusual flora like baobabs, fever trees and knob thorns. The fauna is equally impressive and includes the Big Five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino), the Little Five (buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, ant lion and rhino beetle), and the birding Big Six (ground hornbill, kori bustard, lappet-faced vulture, martial eagle, pel’s fishing owl and saddle-bill stork).

Before long, you will arrive at the Lukimbi Safari Lodge, where you will spend the next two nights. Overlooking the Lwakahle River, the lodge features numerous open wooden decks and raised walkways that provide unobstructed, stunning views. There are also private decks leading out towards the river that are ideal for relaxing and bird watching.

Following lunch at the lodge, you will embark on a late-afternoon game drive in an open 4x4 vehicle, accompanied by a game ranger and tracker.

Late afternoon is one of the prime times to view wildlife, as it’s cooler and the animals are more active. While there is no telling what you will observe, Kruger is home to countless animals, including Africa’s most iconic creatures.

Afterwards, you will return to the lodge for dinner around a roaring boma fire under the stars.

    Day 2 – Thursday, December 17th, 2015

Following an early-morning wake-up call and refreshments, you will enjoy another game drive that showcases the abundant wildlife and natural beauty of the southern region of Kruger National Park.

Bounded by the Crocodile River and the Sabie River, the southern region also features the jagged ridge of the Lebombo Mountains along the border to Mozambique and the highest point in the park, Khandzalive. The valleys are home to trees rarely found in other parts of the Kruger National Park, such as the Cape chestnut, coral tree and lavender fever-berry.

In time, you will return to the lodge for a leisurely lunch and in the late afternoon venture into the bush on another game drive. Because Kruger is home to so many animals, what you see normally varies tremendously. To add even more intrigue, many animals are born this time of the year, and you might catch sight of them.

Later, dinner will be served at the Boma or in the lodge.

    Day 3 – Friday, December 18th, 2015

After an early breakfast and check out, you will transfer to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport for the flight to Johannesburg.

Upon arrival at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, you will be met by a local representative and assisted to your connecting flight to Durban.

Upon arrival at King Shaka International Airport in Durban, you will transfer to the Durban harbor and embark your awaiting cruise ship.

South Africa’s seasons are the reverse of those in the northern hemisphere. Midwinter is in June and midsummer in December and January. The climate varies from region to region but is generally mild.

In November at Lukimbi, there is usually some rainfall in short afternoon showers, so expect lush vegetation. Temperatures typically range from 16-32 degrees Celsius (61-89 degrees Fahrenheit), but may be somewhat higher or lower.

    What to Bring:

Khaki, brown, white and beige-colored clothing. No bright colors. Light cotton tops and cotton trousers and shorts in summer. Safari trousers and warm fleece tops for evenings and cooler days. Swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, camera, film and batteries (including spare batteries), personal toiletries and anti-malaria prophylaxis are also recommended.

    Currency:

The monetary unit of South Africa is the Rand, divided into cents and abbreviated as R and c. Notes currently in circulation are to the value or R200, R100, R50, R20 and R10. Coins are in denominations of R5, R2, R1, 50c, 20c, 10c, and 5c. All major credit cards are accepted at most establishments, although Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards.

    Electricity:

South Africa’s electrical system is 220/230 volts A/C 50 cycles. Most hotels have hair dryers and plug adaptors in the bedrooms.

    Luggage:

Only one suitcase of 20kg (44 pounds) may be checked on the flights. You are also permitted to travel with one piece of hand luggage not exceeding 8 kg (18 pounds). If the hand luggage does not conform to the size specified, passengers may be denied entry into the departure area or sent back to the check-in counter. All hand luggage must be of a size that fits under the seat in front of you or in one of the overhead lockers. Hand luggage must not obstruct the emergency exits or aisles.

    Documents and Visa Requirements:

South African Immigrations requires that you have at least 2 consecutive double-blank pages in your passport, or entry to the country could be denied. Passports should also be valid for more than 6 months at the time of travel. Please consult your local embassy for all visa requirements pertaining to South Africa.

    Accommodation:

    Lukimbi Safari Lodge

There may also be a need to climb steps or stairs on occasion. Wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are advised to check with the cruise line in advance to see if any portion of the tour program may not be considered suitable for their individual situation.
