Bergen, Norway-port

Situated along the Byfjord, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city, and one of its most charming. The city’s history dates back to the early 11th century when Olav Kyrre established a settlement and royal residence here. In 1240, Bergen replaced Trondheim as the capital, and the city quickly prospered. Much of the city's architecture today reflects the lifestyle of the Hanseatic merchants, who resided in narrow row houses near the harbor.

When King Olav Kyrre founded the city of Bergen in 1070, there was already a busy trading center on the site. The sea faring people of the world who have passed through Bergen have left many traces of their time here as evidenced in the buildings, names and traditions of the city. Today, as you sail up the Byfjorden, you are entering not only a modern port, but also a place with a long seafaring tradition, framed impressively by seven majestic mountains and highlighted by a beautiful the fjord.

Your tour begins with a drive along Bryggen and the Hanseatic Pier, and the old wooden warehouses from the Hanseatic period. Continuing on through the city, you will make your way to the suburbs and Troldhaugen, the former home of Composer Edvard Grieg which lies near Nordasvannet. Grieg composed many of his most famous works at Troldhaugen and is buried there with his wife Nina. During your visit, you will have the chance to look at the villa, which stands exactly as it did in Edvard Grieg's days, and time-permitting, perhaps a stroll in the garden where you will find his studio.

Re-joining your coach, you will head back to the city, passing by Grieg Hall, where the renowned Bergen Music Festival takes place each May. A stop will be made at Bryggen and the Hanseatic Pier, where the fish market and characteristic wooden buildings with pointed gables line the harbor. As you stroll down the promenade between ancient buildings and alleyways you will have the opportunity to see the fascinating active workshops where artists produce original items of the finest quality. The buildings are now listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and provide an intimate look at what life in the town was like in the Middle Ages.

After approximately 30-minutes, you will re-board your coach for the transfer back to the ship.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 hour of moderate walking over uneven surfaces and is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Flat, comfortable walking shoes, umbrella and layered clothing are suggested.
