Seville (Cádiz), Spain

Seville (Cádiz), Spain-port

Cádiz, Andalusia's world-renowned capital, has undergone major restoration in recent years. Palm trees, gracious squares, flower-filled parks, ubiquitous red-tile roofed buildings, and bustling street markets make this a most delightful port. The old town, on the tip of the peninsula, is buzzing with beautiful, lively plazas. To get there, you pass through the new town, an elegant metropolis with excellent beaches. Cádiz is also a good starting point for a day trip to nearby Seville, where you can visit the Alcazar, a beautiful medieval Islamic palace showcasing a unique fusion of Christian and Moorish architecture surrounded by lovely gardens; majestic Seville Cathedral (Catedral de Sevilla); and Giralda Tower, offering excellent photo opportunities.

Seville's historic sites, shopping and cuisine are yours to discover during this full-day guided tour of the city.

Depart the pier for the drive to Seville, located 90 miles to the northwest of Cádiz. Seville, Andalusia's world-renowned capital, has undergone major restoration in recent years. You will enter the city via the Avenida de las Palmeras, an avenue lined with most of the main pavilions that were built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. Along the way, you will pass through America Square, home of the Museum of Folk Arts and Customs and the Archaeological Museum, then drive through Maria Luisa Park. As you proceed along Avenida de las Delicias, you will pass the San Telmo Palace and Gardens. In the background, you will see the first tobacco factory in Europe, which is now the Central University, and then enter the Santa Cruz District. Your coach will then stop beside the University of Seville.

Your walking tour will begin with a visit to the Reales Alcazares, the site of the Archive of Indies, and the Gothic Cathedral, Christendom's largest Gothic church. The cathedral features the Patio de los Naranjos and the Giralda, an Arabic minaret that became a Christian church tower; Spain's first belltower was also erected here. In one of the naves of the cathedral lies Christopher Columbus' sepulcher. From here, you will stroll about the narrow back streets of the Santa Cruz District, an old Jewish Quarter, where you can view the Town Hall on Plaza Nueva. Afterward, you will walk to Robles Placentines for a tapas-style lunch.

After lunch, you will take a panoramic tour of the rest of the town. Departing from Christopher Columbus Avenue and continuing along the river, you will see the Torre del Oro. This tower was built by the Almohades in the 12th century, and was used as a fortress and prison during the Middle Ages. Today, it is a Naval Museum. Next, you will see the 18th-century Maestranza Bullring, the site of great successes and tragedies in the history of the torero.

The panoramic tour may be extended for later ship's departures, and may include such additional sights as the 1992 Universal Exposition Area and the bridges built for this event, the Old City walls and the Gateway of La Macarena, which stands adjacent to a church of the same name. Your tour will conclude with a photo stop at the Plaza de España before re-boarding your coach for the 90-mile return drive to Cádiz.

Please note: The drive time from Cadiz to Seville is approximately 1.75 hours in each direction. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes for this tour, which involves approximately 4 miles of extensive walking for about 4 hours, and long periods of standing. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair. Guests are further encouraged to wear conservative attire with covered knees and shoulders in anticipation of an interior visit to the cathedral.
