Tokyo, Japan-port

Because it is the seat of the Japanese government and the home of the Imperial Family, Tokyo is the de facto capital of Japan. The firebombings of WWII in 1945, with 75,000 to 200,000 killed and half of the city destroyed, were almost as devastating as the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. After the war, Tokyo was completely rebuilt. Today, Tokyo is one of the three world finance "command centers," along with New York and London.

Settle in for a relaxing panoramic drive through the downtown to admire signature attractions such as Tokyo Tower, where you will enjoy a spectacular view from high above the city.

After departing from the pier, you will begin driving through the capital, an exuberant modern megalopolis that still reveres its illustrious past. The sights along the way are sure to be outstanding, as you will pass many of the landmarks that define Tokyo.

The city has long been at the cutting edge of design and fashion, and the Ginza shopping and entertainment district is its epicenter. Sights include the clock tower of the Wako Department Store, which was erected in 1932 and has been the district’s symbol ever since. Similarly, the nearby Roppongi district has become an upscale shopping mecca. As you pass through both areas, you can’t help but feel the energy.

The thrills are further magnified at Japan’s second highest structure, Tokyo Tower, which was built in 1958 as a symbol of Japan’s rebirth. After riding an elevator to the nearly 500-foot-high Grand Observation Platform, you will be treated to an astounding view of the city.

The Imperial Palace is another landmark you will view. Regarded as Tokyo’s heart and soul, the 19th-century palace is surrounded by a moat and colorful gardens. Before returning to the pier, you will also see Tokyo Station, an architectural gem that took 60 years to totally restore after it was severely damaged in World War II.

Please note: While this tour is primarily panoramic in nature, there will be approximately 1-hour of easy walking/standing at Tokyo Tower. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair (scooters are not permitted), are able to make their own way on and off the coach, and have an able bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
