1000 Years of History in Wuzhen
Explore ancient Wuzhen, a water town founded more than 1,000 year ago, where you will enjoy an evening cruise on the waterways, behold architectural landmarks and immerse yourself in the traditional culture.
Day 1 – February 10th, 2015
Depart from pier in Shanghai on a comfortable, air-conditioned motor coach and begin driving west to ancient Wuzhen, a city founded in 872 A.D. Over the past 1,000 years or so, Wuzhen has been largely dependent on its waterways for farming and transportation, and little has changed in many respects. Within the town, there are more than 100 ancient stone bridges, and canals extend in seemingly every direction. The majority of the residents still live in wooden houses by the water, emulating a lifestyle much like their ancestors’.
Upon arriving in Wuzhen, you will check-in at the service center and then be treated to a traditional Chinese lunch at a well-known restaurant. Afterwards, you will enjoy an in-depth, guided walking tour in Xizha, a restored historical area of 12 islands connected by dozens of architecturally beautiful bridges. The highlights of this charming district include an ancient drugstore, ornate temples and a museum with exhibits devoted to the ancient Chinese custom of foot binding. You will also notice the western influence on the design of the brick Post Office, which is unlike the majority of buildings in Wuzhen, which are wooden.
Later in the afternoon, you will check in Wangjinli Boutique Hotel for a few hours of free time before a traditional dinner at the hotel. As evening falls, you will board a small boat and cruise Wuzhen’s famed waterways, an outing that presents an entirely different perspective of the city.
Afterwards, a leisurely walk brings you back to the hotel for the evening.
