This relaxing driving tour presents the landmarks of Port Elizabeth, leaving you with a wonderful first impression of South Africa’s beloved “friendly city.”

Depart from the pier in a motor coach, taking note of the Campanile at the entrance to the harbor. Erected in 1923, the tower holds a carillon of 23 bells in honor of the area’s first British settlers. Continuing along the scenic shore, you will pass the lovely suburb of Summerstrand, drive through Nelson Mandela University Campus, and perhaps stop at Shark Rock Pier to take in the fine panoramic view of the city. Throughout this tour, photo stops will be offered where possible, and the route may vary depending on traffic conditions.

Among the buildings in the city center, you will see Port Elizabeth’s beautiful Victorian Library, the Feather Market, which was constructed during the ostrich feather boom, and Diaz Cross, a tribute to Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz, who erected a cross nearby after discovering Algoa Bay in 1488. Port Elizabeth was originally laid out in the 1820s by Sir Rufane Donkin, the area’s governor. At the inner-city park Donkin Reserve, you’ll notice a stone pyramid dedicated to Donkin’s wife, Elizabeth, after whom the city was named. Well-preserved Fort Frederick stands nearby, as do the sporting venues St. George’s Cricket Ground, which is South Africa’s oldest bowling green, and the more modern Nelson Mandela Stadium. This delightful driving tour ends back at the pier.

Please note: This tour is panoramic in nature with limited optional walking at any stops made. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sunglasses; and flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.
