Discover this delightful ancient town and its many treasures, from the superb artifacts in the museum to Ottoman mansions, Byzantine churches and mosques, Hadrian’s Gate, and the ancient Roman harbor now restored and alive with cafés and pleasure boats. Or head for the magnificent ruins of Perge and Aspendos and imagine the history of these cities, from Alexander to St. Paul, the Romans and Arabs. Stand in awe of the huge Roman theater and the crumbling aqueduct. Look for local handicrafts in the old town including carpets, copper ware, jewelry, leather goods and textiles. Try some kebabs, stuffed grape leaves called dolmas and a local dessert called beurrek, a cheese filled pastry. Enjoy a cup of Turkish coffee, a local beer or glass of wine with any of these for a delicious light meal or snack.

Your tour of Antalya, a popular port and resort city first settled in the 2nd century BC by Attalus II, leaves from the pier and begins with a view of the Yivli Minare, or Fluted Minaret. This minaret, which has become the symbol of the city, is part of a 13th century Seljuk medrese and mosque complex. From this point, you will continue on to the charming old city, called the Kaleici, or Inside the Castle where you will embark upon a walking tour of this remarkable historic area. Here you will be able to appreciate the feel and décor of the area, largely unchanged for centuries, as careful restoration and conversion has maintained the original appearance of many of the buildings which line these cobbled streets.

The walls you will see surrounding Antalya were built in the Hellenistic period but enlarged and restored by the Romans and the Byzantines, attesting to Antalya's long history of continuous, though varied habitation. During the course of your tour you will see the massive and impressive Hadrian's Gate, which was built to commemorate the Emperor Hadrian's visit to the city in 130 AD. A little further on, you will find the Kesik Minaret, or Truncated Minaret. Originally a Roman temple, this structure changed with the times, becoming a Byzantine church in the 5th century AD and later converted into a mosque in the 13th century AD. Your walking tour of the city ends at the Hidirilik Kulesi, a 2nd century AD round tower which marks the burial place of a local dignitary. From here, you re-group to continue on to the Antalya Archaeological Museum, one of the very best of its kind in the world.

The collections on display in this renowned museum include pottery, coins, mosaics, sculptures, costumes, sarcophagi, and artifacts found in the once-inhabited caves of coastal Turkey. The Hall of Emperors is one of the museum's most impressive wings. The displays of classical art housed here are simply magnificent, and include statues of the Greek gods, the Emperors Hadrian and Septimus Serverus. You will also see a stunning mosaic collection from Xanthos. Other exhibits on display include the extraordinary finds from the Karain Caves, which date back to the Old Stone Age, a comprehensive and fascinating ethnographic collection, and pieces from the jawbone of St. Nicholas, who was, strangely enough, not from the North Pole, but from the sunny Turkish Mediterranean beach town of Patara. With such a wide array of sights, findings, and works of art, all described nicely in both English and Turkish, the Archaeological Museum will be sure to make a lasting impression with its numerous treasures. At the completion of your museum tour, you will return to the ship.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 1 1/2 hours of walking or standing, at times over uneven surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and is not considered suitable for those with mobility concerns. Comfortable walking shoes, light clothing and a hat are recommended. The order of the sites viewed or visited is subject to change.

*Guests who wish to spend more time in the city center can leave the bus at the shuttle bus drop-off point and return to the pier on a shuttle bus.
