Invergordon, United Kingdom

Invergordon, United Kingdom-port

Invergordon has a tremendous history stretching back through two World Wars. Ideally situated in the center of the eastern Highlands, Invergordon received its name from Sir William Gordon, a landowner of the 18th century. For centuries the estate on which Invergordon now stands was known as Inverbreakie, or “the mouth of the Breakie.” The Breakie presumably is the stream which enters the Firth at Rosskeen Bridge, near the old parish church west of the present Town.

This wonderful half-day tour transports you through the lovely scenery of Scotland's north east coast while on your way to Golspie for a visit to the beautiful and elegant Dunrobin Castle.

Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses; also the largest and one of the oldest continuously inhabited. Standing amidst lush, formal gardens that overlook the sea, this white stone chateau contrasts sharply with the usual dark stone Scottish castles. Like most ancient Scottish castles, Dunrobin started out as a keep - or tower, and is named after its originator, Earl Robin. Although the oldest part of the castle dates from the early 1300`s, subsequent enlargements in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries created the splendid, gleaming, turreted castle that stands today with its majestic towers stretching skyward.

During your guided visit, you will also have an opportunity to view the Dunrobin Castle Gardens. Equally as grand as the castle, these magnificent formal 19th century Victorian formal gardens were modeled on those at Versailles. Their grand French style was also done so to echo the architecture of Dunrobin Castle, which rises high above them and looks out over the Moray Firth.

After a delightful visit, you'll rejoin your coach for the leisurely drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes nearly 2 hours of walking at Dunrobin Castle over mostly even surfaces. There are also a considerable number of steps to be negotiated (approximately 150 steps) and it is not considered suitable for wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Guests should be prepared for the possibility of rain.
