The archipelago of Svalbard is governed by the kingdom of Norway and is situated between 74 and 81 northern, and 10 and 35 eastern latitudes. The islands are cut through by deep fjords and towering mountains; with the interior consisting of large glaciers. The geological conditions here are fascinating and all formations from the Pre-Cambium period and onwards can be found.

The Norwegians and Russians are the only ones that carry out coal mining on the island and the large coal-layers date mainly from the Tertiary Era. The fauna and flora are unexpectedly rich and wildlife here includes reindeer, polar fox, walrus, seals and polar bears. There are no trees, but surprisingly, many colorful flowers can be found here, all of which are under protection by law.

Boarding your coach at the pier, you will commence your tour with a drive to the Adventdalen Valley and the Dog Farm, where you will learn about the different types of Polar dogs and how they helped during the earlier exploration of the Polar Region. Here, you will have the opportunity to observe the friendly Artic dogs and perhaps play with the puppies, which is important for their socializing and training. After your time with the dogs, you will retreat to a warm turf hut, where you can gather around the fireplace for coffee and cake and talk with your hosts about the life in the Artic and how it is to live up here year-round.

Following your visit, you will transfer back to Longyearbyen and the pier.

Please note: This tour involves approximately 90-minutes of moderate walking/standing and there are steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. Warm clothing and flat, sturdy footwear is suggested as the Arctic-region may be covered by snow and ice. The transportation is not air-conditioned. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
