Harstad, Norway-port

Above the Arctic Circle, picturesque Harstad, the cultural capital of Northern Norway, is located on the country’s largest island. A major commercial and shipping hub, the port city mixes modern architecture with old, and is alive with festivals in the summer. Historic trading posts, such as Røkenes Farm and Sandtorgholmen Hotel take guests back in time with their centuries old buildings, fantastic culinary experiences and genuine hospitality. Favorite day trips include the 13th-century Trondenes Church and the nearby Heritage Center; or exploring the Grytøy – Bjarkøy – Krøttøy archipelago by bicycle. And for those looking to get away from it all, the surrounding areas offer mountain trails, both gentle and challenging, amid pristine forests and lakes overlooking majestic fjords.

Harstad is the culture capital of Northern Norway. With its population of 23,000, it is situated on the largest island in Norway; Hinnøya, home to one of the most beautiful coastal areas. Commercial and shipping industries are economically important to the area and the borough is also a base for the oil industry of the north. During summer, the town is teeming with people along the quayside and during festival times, there is music in the streets, in the square, in the pubs, concert hall and churches. Leisure time activities are many and varied in the city and boating is a favorite activity.

Departing the pier, a short drive brings you to the Hemmestad Village/Wharf; a former trading post on the sea at Hemmestad. Time has stood still here for almost 200 years and history can be seen everywhere. The store, the cod liver barrel and the nordland boats that bathe in the sun on the Pebble beach all help to create a magical feeling from days gone by. You can also see the large boathouse that houses a great collection of boats, an exhibition and a café.

From here, you will next travel to Kvæfjord with its picturesque surroundings. The municipality is known for its vibrant nature and has long agricultural traditions. One of its outward trademarks is the juicy strawberries that are grown here in the light from the Midnight Sun. Kvæfjord and its two adjacent fjords Austerfjorden and Gullesfjorden, are good fishing fjords with fishing available throughout the year. The borough also has large woodland and mountain areas with trout and char fishing in the lakes and hunting. The rich bird and animal life that includes eagles, seals and otters, make Kvæfjord an aspired venue for both bird watchers and animal lovers. Your visit will include time at the Trastad Collections which is based in an authentic residential and care facility from 1966 that was a former central institution for mentally challenged persons. On display is a unique collection of art in Norway`s only gallery exhibiting art created by people with mental disabilities.

Leaving Kvæfjord behind, your tour then travels to the unique setting of the Røkenes Farm. The Farm, situated in beautiful surroundings just outside Harstad, has a long and colorful history. It has been run by the same family since 1673, through 10 generations, and the history of the main house dates back to 1750. The owners of this delightful property have developed the estate in the last ten years from a traditional farm to a high quality restaurant. Here, we will be served coffee and Kvæfjord cake. This tasty cake was selected as Norway's National Cake in a nationwide election.

Following your visit to the Farm, you will re-board your coach for the return drive back to the pier where your tour concludes.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2.5 hours of moderate walking/standing and some steps to negotiate. The tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Flat, comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket are suggested. The order of the sites visited or viewed may vary. The transportation is not air-conditioned.
