Bergen, Norway-port

Situated along the Byfjord, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city, and one of its most charming. The city’s history dates back to the early 11th century when Olav Kyrre established a settlement and royal residence here. In 1240, Bergen replaced Trondheim as the capital, and the city quickly prospered. Much of the city's architecture today reflects the lifestyle of the Hanseatic merchants, who resided in narrow row houses near the harbor.

Explore Norway's wonderful centuries-old sites and attractions during this picturesque visit to historic Bergen.

Founded in 1066, Bergen was Norway's largest center for commerce and shipping until the 1830s, and home to the overseas trading offices of Hanseatic merchants for several centuries. Time magazine chose to name the city one of Europe's 14 "secret capitals". Bergen's capital consists of maritime businesses and activities such as aquaculture and marine research.

Your tour begins with a drive along Bryggen and the Hanseatic Pier, with its old wooden warehouses from the Hanseatic period. Next, you'll pass the main sights of the city, including Haakons Hall. Erected during the reign of King Haakon Haakonsson from 1247-1261, it was the largest and most imposing building of the royal residence during a time when Bergen was the political hub of Norway. You'll continue on past Rosenkrantz Tower, built as a combination fortress and residence around 1560 AD. Among the other interesting sites to be seen are Bergen's oldest building, Mary's Church, which dates back to the 12th century, and Grieg Hall, where the renowned Bergen Music Festival takes place every May.

Afterward, you can either take a short drive back to the pier, or opt to browse the market and historic shops along the Hanseatic Pier, returning to the ship at your leisure.

Please note: This tour is panoramic and includes no stops or visits. It is available to wheelchair guests with a collapsible wheelchair who are able to both make their way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned only to participate to the extent of their personal stamina and ability. A windbreaker or light jacket and comfortable, flat shoes are suggested. The order of the sites viewed or visited may vary.
