Hamilton, Bermuda-port

The island has been continuously inhabited by the British since the Sea Venture, captained by George Somers, was shipwrecked here in 1609, the inspiration for Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. Hamilton is the capital and heart of the island. Excellent shopping and dining venues can be found right on Front Street, opposite the pier. Among the attractions not to miss are: Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ), all conveniently located in a complex on North Shore Road; St. Peter’s Church, believed to be the oldest Anglican church in the Western hemisphere, and stunning in its simplicity with its rough-hewn pillars, exposed cedar beams and candlelit chandeliers; and St. Catherine Fort, well-preserved and a great vantage point for photos.

This delightful tour begins at the pier where you will board your van and embark on a journey to some of the most popular landmarks and scenic locations on the southern shores of Bermuda. As you journey along this picturesque stretch of shoreline, you'll take in such sights as Bermuda's famous pink sand beaches, including magnificent Horseshoe Bay and Church Bay. A photo stop will be made at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, which is believed to be one of the oldest cast iron lighthouses in the world. The lighthouse was completed in 1846 and stands 117 feet from the base to the lantern and its beam can be seen 40 miles out to sea. It is from this highly advantageous location that some of the most expansive and picturesque views of Bermuda can be found.

Traveling on, your next stop is at one of the island's marvelous pink sand beaches for a brief photo opportunity before proceeding on to the Royal Naval Dockyard. Your route will first take you over Somerset Bridge, erected in 1620 and the smallest drawbridge in the world, and then through the quaint village of Somerset. Upon arrival at the Royal Naval Dockyard, your driver/guide will point out a number of the attractions here before you are given the opportunity to further explore the area on your own. A thriving tourist area, there is a Crafts Market, numerous shops and dining venues for you to enjoy, and you may also wish to explore the Maritime Museum or Arts Center while here.

Following your free time, you'll re-join your van and begin the return trip to Hamilton by first enjoying a leisurely drive along the Harbor Road.

Please note: Comfortable walking shoes and a light jacket are recommended.
