Manaus (Amazon River), Brazil-port

Manaus, the “Paris of the Jungle,” is the capital of Brazil’s state of Amazonas. The former river village rests along the left bank of the Rio Negro, which merges with the mighty Amazon. Carved from the dense jungle by rubber barons in the 19th century, Manaus has become an ideal starting or ending point for visitors to the mid-Amazon region. Riverboats can be taken through the myriad of tributaries, estuaries and small creeks, where the richest wildlife can be seen. Attractions include the stunning Renaissance-style Opera House and the Customs House, prefabricated in Liverpool England complete with clock tower and known as “Little Big Ben.”

Carved out of the heart of the Amazonian wilderness at the confluence of the Rio Negro and the Solimões River, Manaus' enormous wealth came from the export of rubber in the late 1800s. Today the center of a rapidly developing region, the city still boasts its old-world mansions and monuments, now set amongst modern high rise buildings.

Your scenic drive takes you past many interesting buildings including the yellow-colored Alfandega, the Customs House built by the British in 1902. The city's finest residential district is lined with turn of the century mansions, which represent the great wealth of the people during the rubber boom. The finest example of architecture from the Golden Era of Manaus is the Teatro Amazonas. Newly renovated, the theater is the city's opera house in its entire belle époque splendor. Next, visit The Indian Museum which houses an exhibit of artifacts, costumes, and weapons of the region's principal Indian tribes. Just outside the city is the Military Zoo, where Amazonian wildlife can be seen.

Please note: There are some steep steps during the visit to the Opera House & Indian Museum. The ambient temperature is always high, please dress accordingly and carry water with you at all times. Comfortable walking close shoes are recommended. This tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those guests with mobility concerns.
