Newport, United States-port

Known as the ‘Queen of Summer Resorts’, Newport was home to many of America’s wealthiest Gilded Age tycoons including the Astors, Belmonts and Vanderbilts. Today, the traveler can tour these opulent mansions, carefully restored by the Newport Preservation Society. Walking tours of Newport showcase a fine collection of pre-Revolutionary War buildings in the Colonial Downtown section, sophisticated boutiques and excellent restaurants.

Explore the rich history and splendid scenery of Newport from Colonial times through the Gilded Age during this picturesque tour of the city.

Depart the pier for the drive through Newport, which features more than 150 points of interest. As you drive through the historic district, you will encounter fine examples of Colonial, Federal and Victorian homes, many of which have been designated as National Historic Sites. Other landmarks to be seen include Trinity Church, Redwood Library and the Gothic Church of Saint Mary's, where Jacqueline Bouvier married Senator John F. Kennedy.

Next, you will continue along the world-famous 10-mile Ocean Drive, where you will take in spectacular views of the rocky coastline. Time permitting, a photo stop is made at Fort Adams, the largest coastal fortification in the United States, and home to generations of soldiers from 1824 to 1950. Driving along Bellevue Avenue, you will see where society's millionaires of the early-20th century built their grand summer residences. You will then pass by the opulent mansions of the Vanderbilts, Astors and Morgans, many of which have been beautifully preserved by the Newport Preservation Society.

Following your tour, you may opt to return directly to the ship, or remain in town to independently sightsee or shop, then return to the ship at your own expense.

Please note: This tour is mostly panoramic with very limited walking. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them. Those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing and flat, comfortable shoes are suggested.
