Puntarenas, Costa Rica-port

Puntarenas, which means "Sandy Point" in Spanish, is the capital and main city in the province Puntarenas, Costa Rica, at the Pacific coast. The oddly-shaped province has its largest section in the South, far from the capital. A mountainous country, Costa Rica ranges from sea level to peaks as high as 13,000 feet and a succession of white, sandy beaches follow one another along the Pacific Coast. The country was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502.

Take the opportunity to tour a country famous for its preservation of nature. Begin your picturesque journey with a scenic drive, passing charming towns on the way to San José. The extreme geography and colorful agricultural landscape make for an enchanting journey. In San José view a variety of sights that will illustrate European architectural influences finished with a Latin flair. See La Sabana Park, the National Stadium and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Stop at the National Museum for an up-close look at Costa Rica's past and enjoy a tour of the famed Opera House. Feast on a special luncheon buffet of Costa Rican dishes at Valle del Sol, your own private venue, where you will enjoy a delicious home-style lunch while surrounded by beautiful gardens, a relaxing waterfall, flowers, refreshing air and the sounds of Costa Rican music. This is truly an oasis in the middle of the city. After lunch, join the old "oxcart road" and arrive at the small town of Grecia, famous for its historical metal church. Next, you will arrive at the town of Sarchí, home of Costa Rica's native art. It was here in Sarchí that, more than a century ago, primitive local artists began painting and decorating their traditional oxcarts in intricate, colorful designs. There was spirited but good-natured competition among families to see who could create the most colorful designs. At the town of Naranjo you will rejoin the highway and continue the spectacular drive through the foothills and coffee plantations down the lowland sugar cane country, arriving at the port to re-board the ship.
