Port: Juneau

Juneau

Juneau

In 1880, Joe Juneau and Richard Harris were searching for gold with the help of Indian guides. Finally, they found nuggets "as large as beans." Out of their discoveries came three of the largest gold mines in the world where more than $150 million in gold was mined. Eventually the mines closed, but the town Juneau founded became the capital of Alaska. Its total area makes it the biggest town, in size, in North and South America - and the second largest in the world.

Mendenhall Glacier By Helicopter & Guided Walk *
Tour Code: JNU-018
Duration: 2 1/4 hours
Retail Value: $399.00
Price: $199.00

Light Activity Regent Choice

Experience the Mendenhall Glacier by helicopter and on-foot during a memorable flight-seeing tour and guided walk on this slow-moving river of ice.

Depart the pier for the brief transfer to the heliport. Upon arrival, you will receive a comprehensive safety briefing and be fitted for special glacier-walking boots before boarding a modern, five-six-passenger turbine helicopter for take-off.

Flying high above wetland habitat, alpine ridges and lush rainforests, you will gain a new appreciation for this rugged land as your pilot shares a lively narrative. As you approach the ice field and its many glaciers, you will marvel at the twisted spires, deep blue crevasses and carved peaks that comprise this ancient landscape. Soaring even higher, you will pass by the Mendenhall Towers, jagged rock sentinels soaring more than 7,000 feet, and the spectacular icefalls that overflow to form the Mendenhall Glacier.

Next, you will view icefalls, spires and many hanging glaciers suspended on the surrounding mountainsides before gently landing on this slow-moving river of ice. As you explore the glacier's surface, your expert mountaineering guide will explain how glaciers form, flow and carve out the rugged landscape.

Following your visit, you will re-board your helicopter for the return flight to the heliport, then be transferred back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves approximately 30 minutes of helicopter time, and 20-25 minutes of time spent on the glacier. Dress warmly in layers, and bring a hat, gloves sunglasses, raingear, a camera, and film (or memory) from the ship. Glacier-walking boots will be provided. Due to heightened security, no bags, purses, fanny packs, etc. will be allowed on the helicopter. A secure location will be made available to lock up your belongings. A window seat is not guaranteed. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair.

*Due to safety, comfort, weight and balance limitations, passengers weighing 250 pounds or more will be charged an additional half-fare to reserve extra space on board the helicopter.
