Port: Ketchikan

Ketchikan

Ketchikan

Ketchikan, otherwise known as the First City, has a population of almost 14,000 and is on the southwest side of Revillagigedo Island, only 90 miles from Prince Rupert. The town grew around salmon canneries and sawmills. In fact, at one time Ketchikan was proclaimed the “Salmon Capital of the World,” a title that reappeared in 1996 with a new welcome arch in town. Tourists flock to Ketchikan for their first look at the North Country, and rarely are they disappointed.

The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.

Bear Viewing On Prince of Wales
Tour Code: KTN-013
Duration: 2 1/2 hours
Retail Value: $599.00
Price: $299.00

Light Activity Regent Choice

Discover one of Alaska's largest bear populations during this memorable visit to Prince of Wales Island via floatplane.

Depart the pier in Ketchikan via floatplane for the 20-minute flight to Prince of Wales Island, the United State's third-largest island territory behind Hawaii and Kodiak Islands. The country's overgrown logging areas and many salmon streams serve as an ideal habitat for black bears; the highest black bear population can be found on Prince of Wales Island. This remote destination will serve as the setting for your guided bear tour.

After your plane lands on the water, you will disembark the plane directly onto the beach; depending on the landing location, you may be required to walk in the water to access the beach. You will then proceed to a quiet watershed where bears fish for the spawning salmon that serve as a summer staple for all Alaskan mammals.

Following your visit, you will re-board your floatplane for the return flight to the pier.

Please note: Although bear sightings are common, they cannot be guaranteed. This tour involves approximately 100 yards of walking on an uneven, rocky and, at times, slippery beach, 40 minutes total flying time and 40 minutes on the ground. Participation in this excursion is extremely limited. Depending on prevailing tides, guests may be outfitted with hip boots or waders at the pilot's discretion to make transit from the plane to the beach drier and easier.
