Port: Ketchikan

Ketchikan

Ketchikan

Ketchikan, otherwise known as the First City, has a population of almost 14,000 and is on the southwest side of Revillagigedo Island, only 90 miles from Prince Rupert. The town grew around salmon canneries and sawmills. In fact, at one time Ketchikan was proclaimed the “Salmon Capital of the World,” a title that reappeared in 1996 with a new welcome arch in town. Tourists flock to Ketchikan for their first look at the North Country, and rarely are they disappointed.

The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.

Light Activity

Watch Ketchikan's rich heritage and natural beauty come alive during an exclusive tour of this waterfront city's most memorable attractions.

Depart the pier via a deluxe mini-bus for a scenic orientation tour of Alaska's First City, so named as the first major community travelers visit on their journey north. During your drive, you will become acquainted with Alaska's busiest waterfront, bustling with floatplanes and fishing boats. At the Deer Mountain Tribal Hatchery and Eagle Center, photo opportunities will abound during an up-close look at a pair of American bald eagles in captivity. You will then take a narrated tour of the fish hatchery, where you will learn about the incubation, rearing and tagging of trout and salmon before their release back into the wild.

A highlight of your visit will be a private, up-close showing of two birds of prey; possibly a great horned owl and an eagle. After an introduction by their handlers, you may have pictures taken with these majestic creatures (conditions permitting). During your visit, you will be served an Alaskan tea accompanied by a light snack of special treats, including smoked salmon.

Next, you will take a stroll through picturesque City Park, then on to the Totem Heritage Center, home to the world's finest collection of 19th-century totem poles. From here, you will proceed to the Saxman Native Village for a guided visit to one of the world's largest collections of totem poles.

Your tour will conclude with a visit to the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. Upon arrival, US Forest Service staff will lead you on a fully-guided tour of this world-class facility. You will see exhibits and interactive displays that bring the natural and cultural history of Southeast Alaska to life, and view the award-winning film, Mystical Southeast Alaska.

Following your visit, you will re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier. En route, your driver-guide will provide lively narrative and point out historic Creek Street, where homes and shops on wooden pilings are perched over the water.

Please note: This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. The vehicles cannot accommodate wheelchairs.
