Port: Ketchikan

Ketchikan

Ketchikan

Ketchikan, otherwise known as the First City, has a population of almost 14,000 and is on the southwest side of Revillagigedo Island, only 90 miles from Prince Rupert. The town grew around salmon canneries and sawmills. In fact, at one time Ketchikan was proclaimed the “Salmon Capital of the World,” a title that reappeared in 1996 with a new welcome arch in town. Tourists flock to Ketchikan for their first look at the North Country, and rarely are they disappointed.

The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.

Ketchikan By Horse-Drawn Trolley
Tour Code: KTN-003
Duration: 45 minutes
Retail Value: $89.00
Price: Free

Seated Tour

Experience Ketchikan's sights, sounds and rich native culture during this intimate, horse-drawn trolley tour of the city's most historic areas.

Depart the pier via horse-drawn trolley for a tour of Ketchikan. This tour, suitable for guests of all ages, is a splendid introduction to this charming, frontier-style community. Along the way, you will see picturesque City Park, with its original fountain and ponds, and wooden stairways that serve as streets.

Next, you will follow the banks of Ketchikan Creek, a rich salmon habitat, before reaching the Fish Ladder. Here, you will learn about its function, then visit at the fish-spawning grounds. You will also learn about Alaska's berries, view live salmon in the creek (in season) and discover some of the state's finest examples of native totem poles. Your guide will explain the rich history of this fascinating Alaska port, which has been a stopping point for visitors arriving by ship for more than 100 years.

Points of interest include an early-day wooden street (built on pilings over the ocean and still in use today), Thomas Basin Harbor, which bustles with fishing and pleasure boat activity, the Ketchikan Museum and many other historic structures. The slow-paced gait of the horses will enable your guide to draw attention to the many places of interest, and share their history. Brief photo stops will be made at selected locations.

At the conclusion of your tour, you will be returned to the pier.
