Port: Belize City

Belize City

Belize City

Belize City was founded in the mid-17th century by British lumber harvesters. The city was ideal for the British as a central post because it was a natural outlet for local rivers and creeks down which the British shipped logwood and mahogany. Belize became independent in 1981, following a United Nations declaration to the effect. A British military force was maintained in Belize until 1993, when the government announced Belize would be handed over on January 1, 1994.

Experience the uniquely-diverse topography of Belize during this memorable cave tubing and jungle walk at the Caves Branch River.

Depart the pier with your guide for the 1-hour drive on the Western Highway en route to the Caves Branch River. This river winds through the Maya Mountains and numerous ancient caves once inhabited by the Maya. Upon arrival at Jaguar Paw, your headquarters for the day, you will begin a 45-minute hike down a jungle trail. Along the way, your guide will point out various plants, roots and herbs once used by the ancient Maya for medicinal purposes.

The entrance tunnel that leads into the underground cave system will be the start of your adventure. After your guide hands out headlamps, you will float in an inflated inner tube as the gentle current takes you on a 2-hour journey through the cave system. Intricate crystalline formations line the cave, and you will see plenty of stalagmites and stalactites. On several occasions, you will emerge into the sunlight, only to enter another cave system. At the end of your inner tube tour, a lunch consisting of freshly-prepared chicken with rice and beans will be served.

After lunch, you will re-board your coach for the 1-hour return drive to the pier.

Please note: The drive from the pier to Jaguar Paw is approximately one hour in each direction. As this tour involves travel over uneven and bumpy roads, guests with back and/or neck problems are discouraged from participating. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up, t-shirt, shorts, water shoes or tennis shoes they won't mind getting wet, and bring a towel from the ship. A change of clothes and shoes is also recommended. All guests participating in this tour will be required to fill out a liability waiver. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate in this tour. The cave system and its waterways may cause claustrophobia and panic in a very small percentage of guests. Guests must carry their own tube during the hike.
