Sevastopol, Crimea

Sevastopol, Crimea-port

The hundreds of acres of open land along the Black Sea that is now Sevastopol are dotted with ancient pillars that once supported Greek temples and government buildings. These historical spots, along with fine beaches and beautiful climate would have drawn visitors by the thousands if Sevastopol had been located in the west. Instead, this unpolished jewel remains one of Europe’s best-kept secrets with its uncrowded delights – unspoiled and a pleasure to explore.

Journey back in time to explore the Ukraine's wartime past during this visit to Balaclava, the spectacular battleground of the Crimean War.

Depart from the pier by coach for the 30-minute drive to the 4th redoubt to enjoy panoramic views of Balaclava, and get acquainted with its military history. Next, you will continue on to one of the famous Crimean War sites, the Balaclava Valley. You will pass through the city, then Sevastopol, site of British and French camps during the Crimean War. Your guide will describe the war's history, and point out wonderful sites and photo opportunities along the way. After a brief stop at the Monument of Reconciliation, you will climb a small hill to observe the Northern and Southern Balaclava Valley, scene of dramatic events and battles between 1854 and 1856.

Next, you will proceed along the winding road to Balaclava Harbor, captured by the British on September 26th, 1854. The British used Balaclava as their supply base until departing in 1856. Although the unique S-shaped harbor was an ideal shelter for ships, the British lost much of their fleet due to stormy weather. Another engineering structure built by the British in Balaclava is the embankment, still in use today. History's first professional military hospital was arranged in Balaclava during the Crimean War, and headed by Florence Nightingale.

From Balaclava, you will journey to Sapoune Ridge and Raglan's Viewpoint, named after Lord Raglan, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army during the Crimean War. Lord Raglan watched the disaster unfold before him during the Battle of Balaclava on October 25th, 1854. You will marvel at the wonderful topography of the Balaclava Valley, scene of Tennyson's Charge of the Light Brigade, along with the allied redoubts and adjacent areas visible from the observation platform on the Sapoune.

At the conclusion of the tour, guests will reboard the coach for the 30-minute long return drive to the pier.

Please note: Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for this tour which involves 1 hour and 20 minutes of moderate walking and 50 steps to climb and descend at the 4th redoubt . This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or for guests who utilize a wheelchair. Please keep in mind that guides, though knowledgeable and the best available, are not as skilled as those found in the larger tourist centers of the Mediterranean, or other parts of Europe.
