Gythion, Greece

Gythion, Greece-port

Once the seaport of Sparta, Gythion welcomes visitors with a beautiful coastline and white sand beaches. Near the entrance of the city is the Theatre, which still houses the ruins of the Temple of Athena and the Gates of Castorides. The Archaeological Museum of Gythion has a vast collection that includes finds from excavations of the many ancient sites throughout the city. Be sure to enjoy a delicious seafood lunch al fresco in a traditional ouzerie.

Get an authentic taste of Greek culture by browsing a museum devoted to the olive, stopping at a statue of ancient Sparta’s king Leonidas, and sampling several local wines.

After departing from the pier, you will drive north through the fertile plain of Laconia, which lies in the shadow of the towering Taygetos Mountains. Before long, you will arrive in Sparta for a tour of the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil.

Considering the influence of the olive on Greek culture, it’s no wonder an entire museum is devoted to the iconic olive. The collections include rare fossils of olive leaves that are more than 50,000 years old, ancient clay tablets describing uses for the olive, and various displays showing the role of the olive in modern pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. There are also working models of steam-powered, diesel-powered and even animal-powered olive presses.

Then, it’s on to nearby Sparta, where you will stop at the statue of Leonidas for photos. He was the famed king that led 300 Spartans against Xerxes’ massive army in the Battle of Thermopylae, and he is portrayed as near invincible.

Your next stop is the nearby Theodorakakos estate, a family-operated winery known for producing local varieties such as Kydonitsa and Mavroudi. Besides enjoying an enlightening tour of the winery, you will taste some of its most representative selections, all made without pesticides or chemicals. After visiting, you will return to the pier.

Please note: This tour includes approximately 2-hours of easy to moderate walking/standing that may include some natural surfaces and a few steps. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and those with mobility concerns are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sun glasses; and flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. This tour does not operate on Tuesdays.
