Pisco, Peru-port

Pisco is the largest port between Callao and Matarani, Peru. There are two parts of town: Pisco Pueblo with its colonial-style homes; and Pisco Puerto, which, apart from fisheries, has been replaced as a port by the deep-water Puerto General San Martin. This area was also home of the Paracas culture, and in August 1820, the great liberator General San Martin landed on its coast, marking Pisco as the birthplace of Peru’s struggle for independence.

The National Reserve of Paracas is one of the most important protected areas of Peru. Its conservation is fundamental for the protection of the coastal-marine biodiversity. The Reserve protects a part of the coastal desert of the subtropical Pacific and waters of the Humboldt Current, which is characterized by one of the highest levels of productivity in the world because of the coastal upwelling.

The Paracas National Reserve presents one of the most beautiful desert scenarios of the Peruvian coasts. The numerous desert mountains change their colors each day from different tones of yellow to pinkish-reds. The coastal cliffs are offering scenaric attractions like the famous "Cathedral" (la Catedral), an impressive rock arc used by several species of sea birds to breed on its walls. Another impressive look is the "monk" a stone pillar located on a small rocky outcrop in the sea . Many species find refuge here such as seals and sea lions, Humboldt penguins, sea otters, dolphins and porpoises, and more than a hundred species of seabirds, both resident and migratory. Some of the latter are the Andean condor, flamingoes, cormorants, blue-footed boobies and pelicans.

The reserve is also an important cultural site as it gave birth to a pre-inca culture whose remains can be seen in the small local museum exhibiting the burial sites discovered by the Peruvian Archaeologist Julio C. Tello, under the Paracas desert in 1925, a small collection of weavings is also on display, which will be visited before returning to the ship.
