The Best of Split & Cetina River Cruise
Duration: 6 3/4 hours
Tour Code: spu-001
Croatia's picturesque beauty and architectural past is yours to discover during this scenic tour of Split and the surrounding countryside. Today's Split is the product of 17 centuries of building, renovating and re-modeling, with the new and the old harmoniously blending together and an intriguing warren of narrow cobblestone streets lead you to pre-Romanesque churches that live alongside Gothic chapels, history-filled museums, contemporary art galleries, restaurants and charming cafés.
The tour begins with a panoramic drive through town, passing several of the city's highlights while en-route to your first stop, the Mestrovic Gallery. Ivan Mestrovic is the greatest Croatian sculptor of all times and a large part of his impressive work is displayed here in his house, which now serves as an important Croatian gallery.
Traveling back into Split, you'll begin a guided walking tour of the city. The Old Town of Split is built on and around the spectacular Roman Palace erected by the Roman Emperor Diocletian (born in Salona - today's Solin) in the 4th century. Your first visit is to the well-preserved cellars of the Palace that offer a good view of how life in the Palace was organized. You will also visit the very interesting Cathedral of St. Duje (patron saint of the city). The Cathedral is built on the remains of an ancient shrine and is supposed to be the oldest in the world. An additional visit is planned to the charming Temple of Jupiter, followed by exterior visits to other notable landmarks within the city. There will be some free time here to stroll around on your own or browse for souvenirs in the colorful open market, the largest on the coast.
Re-joining your coach, you'll journey beyond the city, driving along the splendid coastline before turning inland and traveling via a mountain road to Omis, a small town on the estuary of the Cetina River. This swift mountain river carves its way through scenic canyons on its path to reach the sea. There, in the historical center of the shipyards, you will embark small boats and enjoy a picturesque sail through the Cetina river canyon to reach the Radmanove Mlinice restaurant. Upon arrival, you'll be able to relax in the restaurant's warm atmosphere as you are treated to a tasty lunch of local specialties, including some local wine.
Following lunch, it's a return to Split by coach where your tour concludes at the pier.
