Oranjestad, Aruba-port

While the city exhibits beautiful examples of both Dutch and Spanish architecture, it is now a Dutch city, taking its name from the Dutch royal house of Orange, and became the capital Aruba in 1979. When not heading for the famed beaches, the first spot most visitors enjoy is Wilhelmina Park, a lovely tropical garden by the waterfront, great for catching the Caribbean breezes. From here, travel on to the Archaeological Museum of Aruba or the Numismatic Museum of Aruba. The first offers an historical perspective; the latter, a fascinating display of coins from over 400 countries. Fort Zoutman (1796) is the oldest example of Dutch architecture on the island. In 1867, Willem III tower was added. Not only an excellent vantage point for photos, the fort also hosts music festivals and craft fairs.

This fun horseback riding tour allows you to explore Aruba from a very different angle, that being from the back of a horse. Discover the scenic trails and unique flora and fauna of the island at an easygoing pace which is at times, punctuated by moments of excitement.

From the pier, board your coach and venture through the Dutch-influenced streets of Oranjestad and the beautiful roads of the countryside en route to the ranch. Arriving at the stables, you will be greeted by expert guides who will introduce you to your mount, help you into your Colombian-style saddle and offer brief instruction to ensure your safety and comfort.

Once everyone is ready to go, your horseback adventure will begin by traveling through a small suburb, where you will view the homes of local residents. The trail then winds over a hill and into the wild north coast of Aruba. The view from atop your horse affords the perfect perspective for observing the island's natural habitat, such as cactus and divi-divi trees. You may even spot native parakeets along the way.

So far, your exploration has been at a steady walk. But for those who may be itching to go a little faster, your guides and your horse are pleased to oblige. Give your horse a cluck and gentle kick for a thrilling gallop toward your next destination, a beautiful secluded beach. Once you have reached the beach, you are free to dismount, stretch your legs and enjoy a light refreshment.

After a short break, it's time to remount your horse and head back to the ranch. From here, you have the option of returning directly to the pier or continuing to Oranjestad, where you may explore the town independently. Those who elect to continue on to Oranjestad will be responsible for finding their own way back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves approximately 2 hours of moderate horseback riding and is recommended for guests in good physical condition. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests or those guests with mobility concerns. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Sunglasses, sun cap, sunscreen and extra cash for purchases are suggested. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian. Maximum weight to participate is 200 lbs. Guests may be required to sign a liability waiver before being allowed to take part in the tour. Only cameras are allowed on the ride and other personal items will be stored in lockers at the ranch.
