Historical Santa Cruz & Tapas Tasting
Duration: 3 1/2 hours
Tour Code: tci-001
Discover the rich history of Santa Cruz on this walking tour of the city, and then relax while enjoying tapas at an authentic bodega and tapas bar.
Exploring on foot with a knowledgeable guide offers a unique perspective of Santa Cruz in so many ways. From the harbor, you will walk to nearby Plaza de España, the hub of the city's life. A lovely monument commemorating casualties of the Spanish Civil War rises from the center of the square.
Continuing your walk, you will pass one historical building after another. The 18th century Church of San Francisco stands as a beautiful example of island baroque architecture and for a romantic setting, there's the Plaza del Principe. The 19th century Guimerá Theater was renamed to honor Tenerife's great dramatist Angel Guimerá and is renovated inside with frescos by Angel Romero, a local artist. Other notable buildings along the way include the Carta House and the Iglesia de la Concepcion, parts of which date to the early 1500s.
Then, much like a Santacrucero or chicharrero, as an inhabitant of Tenerife is often called; you will experience the lively social life in an authentic bodega. Here, you may enjoy a locally produced wine and a variety of tapas, and continue your sampling at a tapas bar. Afterwards, walk back to ship with your guide, or stay in town and do further exploring on your own.
Please note: This tour includes over 2-hours of moderate walking, at times over uneven surfaces. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and not recommended for those with mobility concerns. A jacket and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Those who elect to stay in town at the end of the tour are responsible for making their own way back to the pier.
