Port: Mykonos

Mykonos
Steeped in Greek mythological history, Mykonos was named after Apollo’s grandson, Mykons, and was the location of the grand battle between Zeus and the Gigantes. Today, this Cycladic island is one of Greece’s most adored destinations due to its picture- postcard setting and growing nightlife. Mykonos is a superb example of Cycladic architecture, and by law even new buildings have to be built in the same style of whitewashed, organic, cube-like buildings.
The following Shore Excursions are available for this port on this cruise, and may be reserved beginning 180 days before the cruise begins.
The Island of Delos Tour Code: MYK-002 Duration: 3 1/2 hours Retail Value: $99.00 Price: Free
| |
After a 10-minute coach transfer, guests will board the local ferry (caique) for a 40-minute sailing ride to Delos; the island of light, and the mythical birthplace of the God Apollo and Goddess Artemis. In Greek, Delos means "what appears" and according to mythology, the island appeared amid the waves, so that Leto would have a place to give birth to Apollo and Artemis.
The island is covered with ruins, fallen columns, sections of the famous mosaics which once adorned the houses of the rich, a stadium and tiers of seats from a theater. Among these ruins, five marble lions stand in a row. Other interesting monuments spread over a wide area are the Agora, the treasures of the various cities, the Sanctuary of Apollo, the theater, the Sanctuary of the Foreign Gods and the Sacred Mount Cynthus. On your return to Mykonos, you can either stroll on your own in the picturesque narrow streets of Chora, or return to the ship.
Please note: This tour involves approximately 2 hours of extensive walking over uneven surfaces. There is limited shade at the site. Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat are recommended.
