Kusadasi

Originally a minor port, Kusadasi now serves as the gateway to Ephesus, one of the ancient world’s largest and most important archaeological and religious sites. Just a half hour drive from the port, Ephesus is where Christian preachers, including St. Paul and St. John, often visited. St. John addresses this city in his Book of Revelation and preached in the Theater of Ephesus. Even one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Temple of Artemis, is located here.

Relive the glory of Turkey's ancient past during this scenic tour of the ruins at Ephesus, a visit to Sirince and lunch at the home of a local village family.

Depart the pier for the 30-minute drive to the ancient ruins at the magnificent site of Ephesus. Upon arrival, you will visit the beautifully restored Celsus Library and Grand Theater, built during the Hellenistic age to hold 24,000 spectators and a site in which St. Paul preached.

Next, you will visit Sirince, an old Orthodox village that today serves as a perfect synthesis of Turkish-Greek culture from the 1920s. The village is also renowned for its local grape and other fruit wines. Upon arrival, you will have a unique opportunity to observe local village life, and purchase some local souvenirs and handicrafts.

You will then proceed to the home of a village family for lunch, then to the main coffeehouse for a cup of traditional Turkish coffee. Depending on the number of guests, a gypsy fortune-teller may also be available.

Following your tour, you may opt to re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier, or be dropped off in Kusadasi to do some shopping and return to the ship on foot.

Please note: Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes for this tour, which involves approximately 1.5 miles of extensive walking on uneven, but mainly level surfaces, and a few steps to climb. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilize a wheelchair. At the end of the tour, guests will be dropped off in town, as the buses are not allowed to return them to the Cruise Ship Terminal parking lot. There will be a short walk from the drop-off point in town back to the Kusadasi Terminal Building.
