This tour includes a visit to the archaeological site of Olympia and time in the village of Olympia. The site was a sanctuary even before the stadium was built and the games took place in the sacred area called Altis. The most imposing monument in this area is the outstanding Temple of Zeus housing the gold and ivory statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Temple of Hera, the Prytaneion, and the Philippeion are also monuments standing in the sacred grove. The famous stadium, the largest of its day with a capacity of 45,000 spectators is entered through a long, tunnel-like passage, constructed in Roman times.
Continuing your tour you shall have some free time at the modern village of Olympia, where you will have about 45 minutes of free time to purchase a coffee or soft drink and relax, or browse through the various souvenir shops before returning to Katakolon.
Please note: The drive to Olympia takes approximately 45 minutes in each direction. This tour involves approximately 2 hours of extensive walking on uneven surfaces at the site. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Guests are also encouraged to wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
